Write down the time you are unavailable
Include your commute, meetings and other commitments. Working from home does not necessarily make every hour available for care. Mark the times you can take a break and the times you’ll need someone else.
Use the plan to arrange help for those hours. It cannot tell you how long your puppy can be left alone.
Check who covers your working hours
Check your workday cover
Include your commute. Add each helper’s availability and confirm who has agreed. This checks for gaps in your arrangements; it does not calculate a safe time to leave a puppy alone.
Enable JavaScript to check your hours, or use the coverage worksheet and example below.
Confirm the care instructions and a backup with each helper. A filled timetable does not assess your puppy’s needs.
Open your routine with these helpers and review suggested carers for each job. Your current coverage plan stays open.
Bring helpers into my routine →
Opens a new tab. Confirmed helper names and hours travel in the link; anyone with that link can read them. The planner removes them from its address after opening. Nothing is saved or assigned until you choose.
Prefer a paper worksheet?
Use these headings on paper or in a note. Fill them in with the people who will be helping:
- Start and end time: the hours each person has agreed to cover, including commuting time.
- Person available: someone who has agreed to the arrangement.
- Care details: the current instructions that person needs.
- Handover: when and how you will pass on what happened.
- Backup: what you will do if the arrangement falls through.
Mark an unconfirmed person as not arranged. A name on the schedule is only useful once that person has agreed to the hours and tasks.
Example: cover for an office workday
Alex works from 09:00 to 17:00 and is away from 08:15 to 17:45 including travel. Jamie and Sam have agreed to be present in these fictional coverage blocks:
- Before 08:15 — Alex: follows the morning care plan and tells Jamie what has been completed.
- 08:15 to 12:30 — Jamie: is present for the morning and follows the puppy’s current care instructions.
- 12:30 to 17:45 — Sam: takes over after a direct handover with Jamie.
- After 17:45 — Alex: returns, checks the care notes and handles the evening and agreed night-time arrangements.
These are people’s coverage times, not intervals between meals or toilet trips. The example does not imply that a puppy can wait until a handover for care.
What if Sam cannot arrive until 13:00?
There is a 30-minute gap. Check whether Jamie can stay, another helper can attend or Alex can change their commitments. Confirm the change before treating the workday as covered. Decide what to do if a helper cancels or the commute runs late.
Turn agreed hours into a puppy schedule
After checking cover, choose Bring helpers into my routine. The planner suggests carers whose agreed hours match each job. Review the suggestions before applying them: available hours do not confirm a particular care task. Gaps stay unassigned, and you choose the person when hours overlap. Your saved routine opens as usual and is not overwritten automatically.
- Open the puppy routine planner and set the day’s start, bedtime and meal reminders from the existing feeding plan.
- Choose Generate starting schedule, then review the example tasks.
- Use Edit entry to change one task. Choose Assign carers to enter a name once and select that person’s jobs. Add a handover entry from More options if useful.
- Review the result and choose Save on device. Agree each person’s jobs separately.
- Share a snapshot or print a copy. Agree separately how helpers will report completed care or changes.
Tell the next person what’s been done
Record what was completed, anything that needs a reply and who has taken over. If a helper needs more detail than fits a daily entry, create dog sitter instructions with the current care notes and contacts.
For a short message after each handover, use the daily care update structure: completed tasks, observations, any question and the next person taking over.
Anyone with a shared link can read the schedule, including names and care notes. Send a new link when the plan changes; the old link will still show the old version.
Check the hours when nobody is available
Confirm that each helper knows when to arrive, how to get in and what needs doing. Arrange a backup if someone cancels. Ask a veterinarian or qualified trainer about your puppy’s care needs and time alone before deciding what cover you need.
Source notes
The reminder to plan for care between household commitments draws on the American Kennel Club’s puppy housetraining guidance. XYZ Pets created the coverage checker, paper worksheet and fictional workday. The checker counts only named, confirmed availability, combines overlapping hours and highlights gaps. Unconfirmed availability does not close a gap. They do not set care intervals or a safe time alone.
Common questions
How does the care coverage checker find gaps?
Enter the time you are away and each helper’s availability. A helper counts only when you add their name or role and confirm that they have agreed. The checker combines overlapping hours and lists any time still to arrange. It does not judge suitable care or a safe time alone.
Can I print or share the coverage plan?
Choose Copy coverage plan to paste the result into a message, or Print / save PDF. You can also choose Save draft on device to reuse names and hours later. Loading a draft clears previous confirmations so you can agree the hours again. Nothing saves automatically, and copied or printed plans do not update.
Does this planner tell me how long my puppy can be alone?
No. It records the arrangement you choose. Discuss your puppy’s individual needs with a veterinarian or qualified trainer and arrange someone to help when needed.
Can I give a helper a copy without an account?
Yes. Use Share schedule to create a read-only snapshot, or print the routine. Anyone with the link can read it.
Will changes reach my helper automatically?
No. Save the edited routine and create a new shared link. Tell the helper which version to use; old links and calendar exports do not synchronize.
